Gagandeep Kaur and Davinder Singh purchased an existing Indian grocery store/kitchen combo named "Bombay Foods & Gifts" in November of 1995. For lack of experience and vision, the focus primarily during the onset was more for an Indian Market than a restaurant. In the year 2000 "Village Chicken," a Greek restaurant in the shopping center, went out of business. Davinder decided to take over the vacant restaurant and converted it into an Indian restaurant named, Bombay Cafe. The opening day was a disaster as we were totally unprepared for the customers that lined up. It took them a few weeks to settle down. The restaurant developed into an Indian sweet shop and Indian street food (snacks and Samosas) place over the years. The concept was changed to a buffet-only place following the 2008 financial meltdown, which had taken a toll on most retail as well as mom & pop places. We have seen a quite a few ups and downs in the last twenty-plus years, but surprisingly the $5 buffet was one of the ups. To keep up with the changing demographics of the area the buffet was discontinued and replaced with a thali (platter) in 2011. Customers, who had gotten used to the cheap buffet were taken aback and rejected the thali model right away. Matter of fact the very first customer walked out, slamming the door after him yelling "you guys have ruined it all" over and over. The carrying out of choice of items (family meals) from the food in the display became the thing of the day, but it took a good four years for acceptance by the customers. As of now Bombay Cafe stands out amongst the Indian food places for it's Samosas, Butter Chicken and Tandoori Chicken. We work very hard to serve healthy food at down to earth prices. We are as conscious of yours and your family's well-being as you are. We select the best ingredients and spices to blend a delicious meal. Bombay Cafe is proud to say it is biggest seller of Samosas in the DMV area.
